I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed

Against the earths sweet flowing breast；

A tree that looks at God all day，

And lifts her leafy arms to pray；

A tree that may in summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair；

Upon whose bosom snow has lain；

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me，

But only God can make a tree.

乔伊斯·基尔默（1886—1918），美国诗人、新闻记者和评论家。基尔默绝大部分的诗歌都不被大众熟知，而发表于1913年的《咏树》却是一首在美国知名度极高的抒情诗。
