Spanish PM Visits China

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy paid an official visit to China from September 24 to 27.

During their meeting, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that China highly values its relations with Spain, and is ready to maintain high-level engagement on international and regional affairs. He urged the two sides to expand bilateral trade and investment, and promote balanced and sustained trade growth. He also promised to strengthen bilateral cooperation in a range of fields including energy and finance, promote cultural exchanges and exchange more teachers and students. Rajoy said Spain is willing to further reciprocal cooperation with China and will continue to play a positive role in the development of EU-China relations.

During their meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping noted that the year 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the two countries comprehensive strategic partnership, and added that the two countries need to enhance exchange and cooperation between governments, parliaments, political parties and local regions. Calling Spain “a good friend and an important partner”of China in the European Union, Xi said China is willing to work with Spain to promote China-EU relations. Rajoy said Spain appreciated Chinas firm support amid the European debt crisis. Spain will continue to push forward the healthy development of EUChina relations, and work with China in the UN and on climate change issues.

Yang Jiechi Visits Malaysia

On October 7, 2014, Prime Minister Najib Razak of Malaysia met with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi in Kuala Lumpur.

Najib Razak said that as comprehensive strategic partners, Malaysia and China enjoy broad areas for bilateral cooperation. Chinas vigorous economic growth is of great significance to both Malaysia and Asia. The Malaysian highly values Chinas initiatives of building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and establishing the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and stands ready to take an active part in and conduct active cooperation to expand and deepen bilateral cooperation in all fields. Yang Jiechi pointed out that China supports Malaysia in taking ASEANs rotating presidency next year and stands ready to work with Malaysia to advance healthy development of China-ASEAN relations and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.

On the same day, Yang Jiechi also spoke with other Malaysian dignitaries and reached a broad consensus. Both sides agreed to maintain close dialogues and exchanges; to actively promote trade and investment; and to cooperate on law enforcement and security. They also vowed to increase people-to-people and cultural exchanges; to improve coordination in regional affairs; and to continue to properly handle the South China Sea dispute through friendly discussion and mutual respect, safeguarding peace and stability in the region together.

Chinese Presidents Book Debuts at Frankfurt Book Fair

Xi Jinping: The Governance of China made its debut at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 8.

The book, published in Chinese, English, French, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Japanese, includes Xis speeches, answers to questions, and directives from 2012 to 2014. It also includes 45 photos of Xi.

The book records Xis thinking and practice as well as that of the central leadership, responds to concerns of the international community, and opens a window for outsiders to observe and understand China, said Cai Mingzhao, minister of Chinas State Council Information Office, at the books launch ceremony.

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said: “After Xi took office as President and General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, the Chinese government put forward an ambitious and comprehensive reform plan. This book explains the position of the central leadership of the country, which could help us understand Chinas politics.” Robert Lawrence Kuhn, chairman of U.S. Kuhn Foundation, said the book is a milestone that explains and enriches the idea of the Chinese Dream.

Forum on China-Africa Cultural Heritage Protection Opens in Beijing

A forum on protecting Chinese-African cultural heritage was held in Beijing on September 23 and 24. Ding Wei, Chinas Vice Minister of Culture, and Andrew Langa, Zimbabwes Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, attended the opening ceremony. More than 50 cultural officials and experts from China and 18 African countries attended the forum. In his speech, Ding underscored the importance of cultural heritage preservation in promoting a nations culture and maintaining global cultural diversity. Andrew Langa introduced the history and current condition of heritage perseveration in Zimbabwe and put forward proposals on jointly advancing China-Africa cultural heritage protection, learning from each other and promoting development of Chinese and African cultures.

Attendees discussed implementing international conventions on cultural heritage protection in related countries, China and African countriespolicies and status quo on cultural heritage preservation, and the best ways to carry out international cooperation.

The purpose of the forum is to implement the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Beijing Action Plan (2013-2015), which calls for strengthening exchanges and cooperation in cultural heritage preservation.
