Newspapers have tried many things to stop a seemingly nonstop going down in readers. Now France is pushing forward with a novel approach: giving away papers to young readers in an effort to turn them into regular customers. The French government recently made plans of a project called “My Free Newspaper”, under which 18- to 24-year-olds will be offered a free, year-long subscription(订阅)to a newspaper of their choice.

Newspaper readership in France has been especially low among young people. According to a government study, only 10 percent of those aged 15 to 24 read a paid-for newspaper daily in 2013, down from 20 percent ten years earlier.

Emmanuel Schwartzenberg, a former media editor of Le Figaro, the oldest and second-largest national newspaper in France, said he had strong reservations(保留意见)about the government project. At a time when advertising is in steep reduction, he said, newspapers should instead be looking at ways to raise more profits from readers, rather than giving papers away. “This just strengthens the belief that newspapers should be free, which is a very bad idea,” Mr Schwartzenberg said.

French readers, young and old, already have plenty of free choices from which to choose, including newspaper websites and the free papers handed out daily in many city centers. Some bloggers(博主)said the new program might interest the few young people who do already read and buy newspapers.

The French government plans to give publicity to the program with an advertising campaign aimed at young readers and their parents. However, when asked how to attract young readers to the printed press, the government said the essential channel for the ads would be the Internet.

Mr Magic, who helped pave the way for the development of hip-hop culture, died of a heart attack on Friday in Brooklyn at the age of 53. Mr Magic was the first host on profit-making radio to devote(奉献)a program especially to rap when his “Rap Attack” began broadcasting(播放)on WBLS-FM in New York in April, 1983.

“Magic was the guy who carried a flag for that music on the radio, exactly as Freed had done for rocknroll,” said Bill Adler, a former director of publicity for Def Jam Recordings.

In the 1970s Mr Magic was a traveling DJ in Brooklyn, and a few small record companies were starting to release(发行)rap records. He bought some late-night time on a New York radio station, WHBI (now WNWK), to broadcast the new music.

Mr Magics big breakthrough came when WBLS-FM, a larger New York station, decided to take a chance on rap in April 1983. Soon Mr Magic was in a spirited competition with a rap show on the station KISS-FM hosted by a DJ who called himself Kool DJ Red Alert.

Williams, the co-producer of “Rap Attack”, said that in 1984, WBLS wanted to give up the rap show because of a serious lack of audience and offered Mr Magic the chance to host a show playing softer music. “If I stop playing, rap will die,” Mr Magic said, and returned to WHBI. He came back to WBLS the next year and stayed there until 1989. He then worked for WEBB in Baltimore until 1992. In 2000 he left to work for WQHT in New York.

For more than six years, he had been unable to get another show. “I watched Magic become sadder, thinner and more upset,” Williams said. Mr Magic was separated from his wife. He was also survived by his two sons and one daughter.

Dave needed to prepare for Saturdays fishing festival. He went into his room, where he had more than 20 rods and reels(竿和卷轴). In those years he went fishing twice a year at Big Bear, a huge lake in southern California about 7,000 feet up in the mountains.

California tried to improve the fishing industry by starting a Free Fishing Day twice a year, one in June and another in September. Thats enough for Dave. He went mostly because it was a social event with a few friends, not so much to catch fish. Even driving up a twisty two-lane (弯弯曲曲的双车道的)road was worth the festival, let alone the big, beautiful houses and trees that lined the shore of the lake.

Preparing was a project in itself. Dave had even created a computer file named Fishing Festival. It was a checklist of 45 things to take to Big Bear. He took two rods, because on Free Fishing Day you were allowed to fish with two rods instead of the usual one rod. He took a sweatshirt, jeans, two pairs of socks, a heavy jacket, winter gloves, and a scarf. He also took shorts, a T-shirt, sunglasses, a big hat, and a lightweight raincoat. If you go to Big Bear in June, youd better be prepared for hotness or cold, rain or shine.

He prepared a couple of magazines to read just in case the fish werent biting. He and his friends joked that the fish were always biting—in the spot you just left or the spot you were headed for.

After about an hour and a half, Dave had gathered all the things on his list into a clean pile next to his door. He went to bed knowing that tomorrows weather and fishing were unpredictable, but the good time with his friends was a given.
