- Passage 1 -

A friend of mine was sitting in the living room one day when his cat dragged in a little “gift” in his mouth—a dead animal of some sort. Taking a closer look, he was surprised to recognize the dead animal to be a bunny that belonged to a little girl who lived next door. Her name was Bonny. My friend felt terrible, believing his cat had killed Bonnys bunny.

My quick-thinking friend came up with a plan. Removing from the cats mouth the dead animal, which by now was a dirty mess, he put it in the kitchen sink (水池). With a little warm

water and some shampoo, he tried to clean up the dead bunny as best he could. Then he took a hair dryer and blow-dried the bunny until it looked pretty good.

Finally, he took the dead bunny out to the neighbors rabbit hutch (茅屋) and placed it

back in the cage. He kind of fluffed (抖开) it up so that he looked very natural there in its box.

The next morning, he looked out of the window and noticed a crowd of people gathered around the rabbit hutch. Everyone seemed to be talking and pointing. He decided to go over and act like any normal curious neighbor and find out what was going on.

When he got there, Bonnys mother said to my friend, “you wont believe what has happened! Its a miracle! Bonnys bunny passed away a few days ago, and we buried (埋) that little bunny right over there…

- Passage 2 -

Once upon a time there was a man who left his own country for the world known as the Land of Fools. He soon saw a number of people flying in terror from a field where they had been trying to reap wheat. “There is a monster in that field.” They told him. He looked, and saw that the “monster” was merely a watermelon.

He offered to kill the monster for them. When he had cut the melon from its stalk (藤), he took a slice and began to eat it. The people became even more terrified of him than they had been of the melon. They drove him away with pitchforks, crying, “He will kill us next, unless we get rid of him.”

It so happened that shortly afterward another man also went to the Land of Fools. But instead of offering to help the people with the“monster,” he agreed with them that it must be dangerous, and by tiptoeing away from it with them he won their confidence. He spent a long time with them in their home until he could teach them, little by little, the basic facts which would enable them not only to lose their fear of melons, but finally to cultivate melons themselves.”

This action of the first person may have worked out the immediate problem, but it didnt comfort the“Fools” because they still held to the original fear. The second person won the confidence of the people and helped them by showing them not only how to overcome their fear of the unknown, but to also accept the melons and cultivate (培育) them for their own benefit.

Dont be afraid of the melons you come across in your lives, but rather welcome them and learn how to cultivate this new knowledge for your benefit and the others around you.

D. Because the first man was thought to be even scarier.

( )3. Which word has the same meaning as “get rid of” in the passage?

A. overcome B. win C. accept D. cultivate

( )4. Why could the second man help the people successfully?

A. Because he was also afraid the watermelon.

B. Because he won their confidence firstly.

C. Because he spent a long time with them.

D. Because he knew the first mans experience.

( )5. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. The first man was brave. B. The second man was clever.

C. The people in the Land of Fools were foolish.

D. The people in the Land of Fools learned to grow watermelon in the end.

- Passage 1 -

Cause and effect is one way to explain things that happen around us. Many things happen because something caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what causes the effect. It may help you to start with the effect and use your reasoning (推理的) skills. Think about all the things you know that could be reasons for the effect you can see.

For example, you may see someone putting on a heavy jacket. This is the effect. To look for a cause, think to yourself, “What would make someone put on a heavy jacket?” Maybe the person is going outside into very cold weather. Maybe the person works in the penguin pen (企鹅圈养地) at Sea World. Maybe the person is going to visit an ice skating rink where the air is kept very cold. All of these things could be a cause for putting on a heavy jacket.

Now, think about a second example. The effect is that a boy named Abi had to go to the head teachers office. What are the possible causes? Maybe he bullied (欺负) another student. Maybe he is just being picked up early. Maybe he is being given a prize!

Here is another example for you to think about its cause and effect. Cait, 13, was trying to fall asleep when her 8-year-old brother, Doug, came into her room. He looked around a bit, but seemed really out of it. Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the hall light for quite a while. Little brothers can be very strange, but this was really much too strange. Caits father appeared and explained that Doug was sleepwalking. Whats the cause and effect, could you tell?

( )1. According to the second paragraph, which of the following is an effect?

A. Someone puts on a heavy jacket. B. Someone works in the penguin pen.

C. Someone will go outside into cold weather.

D. Someone will go to visit an ice skating rink.

( )2. Abi has to go to the head teachers office. Which of the following isnt the possible cause?

A. He bullied another student. B. He is going shopping.

C. His is being picking up early. D. He is being given a prize.

( )3. What was Doug doing when his sister Cait tried to fall asleep?

A. He was going outside. B. He was reading a story.

C. He was sleepwalking. D. He was looking for his dad.

( )4. Which of the following is cause and effect?

A. Tony got up and had a glass of water. B. We came home and found him sleeping.

C. The ball was lost and a window was broken.

D. Tim was late again and his teacher got angry.

( )5. What is the best title for the next?

A. Truth and Lies B. Work and Sleep

C. Cause and Effect D. Life and Dreams

- Passage 2 -

Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.

Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics (特点) which give us courage and make us want to learn from them. A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just the person with great fame (声誉) .

A hero has powers (力量) larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.

A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr., Americans might take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colours of their skin.

There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly.

( )1. According to this passage, a hero is a person who always _______.

A. gives us courage B. thinks highly of others

C. shares great fame D. stands on the mountaintop

( )2. If you want to live like a hero, you should _______.

A. experience a new and meaningful life B. listen to something worth talking about

C. serve your own fame and try to be famous

D. know where and how you want to live and die

( )3. The underlined word “vision” in the passage means “_______”.

A. 风景 B. 想象 C. 远见 D. 形象

( )4. Black people in America used to _______ before Martin Luther King, Jr..

A. shop at the whites stores B. drive buses with the white

C. take walks in the whites parks D. eat in restaurants without the white

( )5. What can we learn from the passage?

A. We dont need heroes anymore at some point now.

B. Heroes are all the same though different in cultures.

C. People get power from heroes to move to a new place.

D. Our society has developed faster because of heroes in history.

- Passage 1 -

The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning (旋转) of the earth.

At the equator day and night are sometimes the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 oclock in the morning and sets at 6 oclock in the evening. For six months the North Pole (北极) is tilted (倾斜) toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere (半球) gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

( )1. When people talk about the number of days in a year, the “day” here means _______.

A. the time between sunrise and sunset B. 12 hours

C. 24 hours D. from morning to evening

( )2. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by _______ of the earth.

A. the pushing B. the pulling C. the spinning D. the passing

sunlight.

A. less B. more C. all D. no

( )5. When it is winter in China, _______.

A. the USA is tilted toward the sun B. the South Pole is tilted away from the sun

C. the North Pole is tilted toward the sun D. the North Pole is tilted away from the sun

- Passage 2 -

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.

Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save yourself. It is important to know the ways you can use and to show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways (楼梯) and fire escapes, but not lifts.

From the lower floors of the building, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving through windows with the least chance of serious injury (伤害).

The second floor windows are usually not very high from the ground. An average (普通的) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.

Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked (渗入) into the room.

On a second or third floor, the best windows for escaping are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely, dropping onto stones might end in injury, bushes and grass can help to break a fall.

( )1. It is important to _______.

A. know the way to escape a fire B. put out a fire in a burning house

C. jump out of a burning house D. keep the door closed

( )2. It is possible to escape through the windows _______.

A. if there are some stones on the ground B. if there is some grass on the ground

C. if you live on a higher floor D. if you have a short enough rope

A. You can escape through lifts.

B. You can choose fire escapes.

C. You cant escape through stairways.

D. Keep your head high at the window to be sure you get fresh air.

A. smoke and fire cant be drawn into the room
