This kind of deception happens too often. Its a sad fact of life： Lies are lies， and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them， all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year， Ive found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However， people still use their bicycles to get around. For many， its the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver， green， red， blue， yellow， whatever you want.

The scene in the Hollywood movie The Day After Tomorrow， where global warming could soon turn the global climate into a new ice age， may never occur， according to a new research.

The next ice age could be 15，000 years away， said European scientists who last month announced a continuous record of 740，000 years of climate data obtained from the Antarctic ice.

Scientists from 10 nations have now almost completely drilled through a 3，000-meter depth of ice in the Antarctic mainland. They figured out that the area where summer temperatures can fall to -40℃， has at least 9，000，000 years of snowfalls， kept as neat as the growth rings of a tree. And the ice and air caught in each layer （层） have begun to answer questions about the global climates in the past.

The results show that there have been 8 ice ages in the past 740，000 years and 8 warmer periods. And by comparing the pattern of global conditions today with that of the past， the researchers reported in Nature that the present warm period could last another 15，000 years.

The research suggests that there is a very close connection between greenhouse gas levels and global average temperatures. It also shows that carbon dioxide （二氧化碳） levels are the highest for at least 440，000 years.

Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories， he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people.

Born in 1881 in a wealthy family， Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893， however， his grandfather， a senior government official， was put into prison for taking money. At the same time， his father became seriously ill. From that time on， his family were no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing.

By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899， he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There， he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books， although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was in need of money.

After working for several years as a teacher in Beijing， Lu Xun again returned to writing. In 1918， he wrote his famous short story Diary of a Madman. It was the first Chinese novel published using the everyday language that people spoke， which helped make it a great success. This， together with his novel The True Story of Ah Q （1921）， made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer.

Although successful， Lu Xun still worried greatly about Chinas future. In 1926， he moved to Shanghai and gave up writing stories in order to devote himself to what he called “pen warfare”. He now only wrote articles which called on the people to fight against the government. For this， the government stopped him from publishing any more books. He was forced to write his articles using false names.

BEIJING—China has a growing middle class， a tradition of expecting education and 21 million new babies every year. Selling educational toys should be easy.

Police in Taiwan cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely clever act of stealing or a cleverer cheat. Either way， it could be a perfect crime， because the criminals are birds—homing pigeons （鸽子）！

The second， and less important stage happens during the period of dreaming or “rapid eye movement （REM）”. When people dont sleep well in the first half of the night， their memory consolidation is almost the same as having no sleep at all.

Medical research is leading American education officials to consider having high school classes start later in the morning. The research says that teenagers are more awake later at night than adults are. When staying up late at night， the teenagers have problems learning early in the morning.

Ceremonial bathing has existed for thousands of years and has many forms， one of which is the sauna.
