《南国野兽》根据Lucy Alibar的独幕剧《多汁且美味》（Juicy and Delicious）改编，讲述的是在一个被人遗忘的叫巴斯托布的河口地区，生活着一群贫穷的人。他们的祖祖辈辈都生活在这里，没有人想着要出去工作或者是改变这里的生态。6岁的“小玉米饼”和她的爸爸温克生活在此地。命不久矣的温克对女儿很严厉，一心希望她早日学会自己生存。一场可怕的飓风席卷了这个小村庄，他们的家园被野兽般的洪水吞噬。大灾难过后，幸存的人都团结在一起，开始重建家园。然而事情并非如此简单，洪水一直没有退去，小村庄的一切都开始衰败，动物尸体随处可见。而另一方面，外面的世界已经将此地划为强制撤离区域，相关人员进入村庄，强制把他们带去避难所，但他们都设法“逃”了回来。面对这残酷得如一头野兽的世界，面对暴躁且濒死的父亲，面对肆虐的洪水和荡然无存的家园，“小玉米饼”不得不坚强地学习如何生存、如何生活以及如何去解读并理解这个世界……

（Although its a poor and harsh environment， people there still enjoy living in Bathtub， because they think that brave men dont run from their homes.）

Wink： Aint that ugly over there？ We got the prettiest place on earth.

Hushpuppy： Daddy says， up above the 1）levee， on the dry side， theyre afraid of the water， like a bunch of babies. They built the wall that cuts us off. They think we all gonna drown down here. But we aint going nowhere. The Bathtub has got more holidays than the whole rest of the world. Daddy always saying， that up in the dry world， they got none of what we got. They only got holidays once a year. They got fish stuck in plastic 2）wrappers. They got their babies stuck in carriages. And chicken on sticks and all that kind of stuff. One day， the storms gonna blow， the grounds gonna sink and the waters gonna rise up so high， there aint gonna be no Bathtub. Just a whole bunch of water. But me and my daddy， we stay right here. Wes who the earth is for.

（尽管生活贫穷、生活条件恶劣，但是巴斯托布的人们依旧坚守自己的家园，因为他们认为，勇敢的人是不会逃离自己的家园的。）

温克：那边很丑是不是？我们住的地方是地球上最美的。

（Wink is really sick， and he keeps this secret to himself. But Hushpuppy is clever enough to know it all by what she sees.）

Hushpuppy： Kids that got no mama， no daddy and nobody， they gots to live in the woods， and eat grass and steal underpants. If Daddy dont get back soon， its gonna be time for me to start eating my pets.

（Winks back.） Daddy！ Daddy！ I learned lots of things while you were gone. If I drink all this here， I can 3）burp like a man. Why are you wearing that dress？

Wink： Leave me alone， man.

Hushpuppy： You wearing a 4）bracelet too？

Wink： Go to your house. You wouldnt understand.

（温克已经病危，可是他却谁都没有说。但是聪明的小玉米饼看在眼里，她已经知道了一切。）

小玉米饼：那些没爹没娘没任何人照顾的孩子，就要在丛林里生活，靠吃草为生，还要偷别人的内裤穿。如果爸爸再不快点回来，我就得开始吃我的宠物了。

（温克回来了。）爸爸！爸爸！你走的这段时间我学会了很多东西。如果我把这些都喝了，我就可以像大人一样打嗝。你为什么穿成这样？

温克：让我一个人待着，小鬼。

小玉米饼：你还带了手环（译者注：温克手上戴着医院的手环）？

暴风雨要来了！

（This poor region has been attacking by the terrible storm. For Hushpuppys house is burned， she has to stay in her fathers house， with a leaking roof. Wink is taking some measures to protect his daughter. Everything is under water in Bathtub in a short time.）

Voices： The storms coming！ The storms coming！ The storm is coming！ The storm is coming！

Wink： Just because you burnt your house down， dont mean you can walk in here and take over. This side of the house is still Winks side. No toys， no girl stuff over here. And if I want to come over there and 5）smack you in the face， thats against the rules， so thats a plus for you. So come on down here and get in the boat. Come on， get in the boat！ Get in the boat. And if the water gets real high， were gonna float to this roof， were gonna bust through the ceiling and were gonna ride away， OK？ Now I want you to put these on， OK？ Slide your arm through here. Dont you never， never take these off. Im your daddy and youre gonna do what I tell you to do， because its my job to keep you from dying， OK？ So sit back and listen to me. And close your eyes. Go to sleep. Go to sleep！

Hushpuppy： For the animals that didnt have a dad to put them in a boat， the end of the world already happened. Theyre all down below， trying to breathe through water.

Wink： Someday when Im gone， you gonna be the last man in the Bathtub. You have to learn how to feed yourself. Now stick your hand in this water. Stick it in there. OK， what you do is you hold your hand steady， and you just wait on your fish to come. You gotta ball your fist up， OK？ Thats your punching hand. Ball your fist up， case you have to 6）whack him when he come out. All right， all right. Oh， got it， got it！ Yeah！ Oh， Lord！ Look what we got！ Look what we got！ Gotcha. We got it！ Say， “I gotcha！”

Hushpuppy： I gotcha！

Wink： Yeah！ Hold him down. You hold him down like this， and you whack him good with your fist. Go ahead， whack him！ You whack him good. Hold him like that and whack him. Hold it.

Hushpuppy： Ow！（Shes hurt by the catfish.）

Wink： Dont worry about that. Thats all a part of it. Come on， you want to try it again？ Come on， one more time.

小玉米饼：对于那些没有爸爸把它们放进船里的小动物来说，世界末日已经来了。他们都在水底下，试图透过水呼吸。

Hushpuppy： You gonna be dead？

Wink： No.

Hushpuppy： You gonna leave me alone？

Wink： No， I aint gonna leave you alone.

Hushpuppy： Because if you be gone， I be gone too.

Wink： No， thats not how it work.

Hushpuppy： Sometimes in the bed， I start to shake and I cant stop. I got what you got.

Wink： No， thats just a side effect of you being a stupid little girl.

Hushpuppy： I aint gonna be dead？

Wink： No， youll probably live a hundred years more. I got to go lay down. I got to get strong. Dont be scared.

（温克已经病重，命不久矣。）

小玉米饼：老爸，你以为我不知道吗？你以为我看不见吗？

温克：不准哭。过来喝一杯。这杯算是我为这一切事情道歉。

小玉米饼：你会死吗？

温克：不会。

小玉米饼：你要扔下我一个人吗？

温克：不，我不会扔下你的。

小玉米饼：要是你死了，我也会死的。

温克：不，不会这样的。

小玉米饼：有时候躺在床上，我会止不住地颤抖，我也得了和你一样的病。

温克：才不是，那只是你做蠢丫头的副作用而已。

小玉米饼：那我会死吗？

温克：才不会呢，你会长命百岁。我要躺会儿，我要恢复一下体力，别怕。

（The people from Bathtub are forced to stay in the“shelter，” but they try to get away from there. And Wink let Hushpuppy back home herself with other fellows on the bus， but she manages to get off the leaving bus.）

Hushpuppy： Youre trying to get rid of me！ Youre trying to get rid of me！

Wink： Listen to me. Im not trying to get rid of you.
