有多少灾难词汇你不知道？

2010年2月27日，当地时间凌晨3时34分，智利发生里氏8.8级特大地震，其强度相当于15个汶川地震。智利大地震中死伤情况最惨重的海港城市——塔卡瓦罗市市长表示，智利没有卫星和先进设备，接收外国预警信号的人也听不懂英语，导致疏忽了美国发给智利的海啸预警。

从整个世界的范围来看，各种自然灾害（na tu ra l ca lam ity）一个接一个，旱灾(Drought)、洪涝 (flood ing)、台风(typhoon)、龙卷风(to rnad o) (比较口语的说法是tw ister、hu rricane)、风暴潮(storm tide)、冻害(freeze in ju ry)、雹灾( hail d isaster)、海啸(Tsunam i)、地震(ea rthquake)、火山喷发( the erup tion of vo lcano)、滑坡(landslide)泥石流(mud-rock flow)、沙尘暴(sand sto rm)、森林火灾 (fo rest-fire)、农林病虫害(fa rm ing and forestry p lan t d isease)等，近年来，我们听说过的灾难在现实世界中都再现了一次。所以，记住一些跟灾害有关的英语单词是十分必要的。表示有关灾难，不幸事件的单词有：a cc id en t、ca lam ity、ca ta strop he、ca taclysm d isaster 、m ischance、 m isfortune、m ishap、 tragedy等。

1、acciden t事故，意外的事。

An aw fu l acciden t has happened. 发生了一起可怕的意外事故。

2、m ishap轻微的事故；小的意外。

I’m a fraid you r son had a slight m ishap in the p layg round. 不好了，你儿子在操场上出了点小意外。

3、m ischance厄运，不幸，倒霉事。

Wha t w e need now is a saving clause in case of some un foreseen m ischance, such as damage by ra ts, etc. 现在我们所需要的是一个附加条款，对诸如鼠害等意外事件做出规定。

4、m isfortune不幸的事，灾难，灾祸。

6、d isaster， ca lam ity， ca tastrophe， ca taclysm均指带来致命的或毁灭的结果；

其中：

d isaster 一般暗示巨大的破坏、困难或丧失生命。

ca tastrophe 特别强调最后的悲剧结果。

ca taclysm 指巨大的劫乱，从而带来根本性的改变。

The extinct vo lcano’s erup tion wou ld mean a ca taclysm for the city. 死火山又重新喷发, 对这座城市来说意味着大难临头。

根据灾难的破坏程度由小到大，表示破坏、毁坏的单词依次是：

damage、destroy、demolish、sha tter、 raze、devasta te、annihila te

damage 指“价值、用途降低或外表损坏等, 不一定全部破坏, 损坏了还可以修复”, 如:The heavy rain damaged many houses.大雨毁坏了许多房子。

destroy为常用词, 指“剧烈地破坏”、“使之不存在”或“使之失去效能”，

Tha t tow n w as destroyed in a big fire.那个城镇在一场大火中被毁了。

demo lish 指“由于短暂猛烈的动作而摧毁或拆毁” 。

The bombs demo lished the factories .炸弹炸毁了许多工厂。

sha tter粉碎，破坏，指“表面已碎为尖锐碎块”。

raze 指“夷为平地” The city w as razed by the ea rthquake.地震彻底毁坏了这座城市。

devasta te指“彻底破坏；摧毁；毁灭”

Ea rthquakes can a lso cause tsunam is, w hich devasta te coasta l reg ions.地震还引发海啸，它直接破坏海岸地区的人和物。

annihila te 指“彻底破坏”、“摧毁”、“消灭”

The invaders were annihila ted.侵略者被消灭了。
