could是can的否定式，但同时could和can一样，也是一个情态动词，所以他俩的意思都是“能，可以”。否定形式分别是cant和couldnt。作为独立的动词can和could也是有区别的：

1.can 表示现在的能力，could 表示过去的能力。例如：

He can speak a little English now.

他现在能说一点英语。

She could play the piano when she was five.

她5岁时能弹钢琴。

2.在表示请求、许可时，没有时间区别，在语气上could 更加委婉客气。例如：

Can I use your pen ?

我能用一下你的笔吗？

Could I have a look at your book ?

我可以看一下你的书吗？

3.在表示可能性方面，没有时间区别，can可能性比could大。例如：

Can it be true?

这会是真的吗？

Anybody can make mistake.

任何人都可能犯错误。

The weather here could be very cold in winter.

这儿冬天的天气有时很冷。
