Qing Dynasty, Kangxi reign, blue and white teapot with pine, bamboo and plum.

This teapot is cleverly made. The creator ingeniously incorporated the images of pine, bamboo and plum in the structure of the teapot. The trunk of the pine is shaped in three dimensions to form the handle of the teapot and connected with the branches on the body. Bas-relief bamboo joins are turned into the spout of the teapot, connecting with the bamboo branches on the body. Three-dimensional plum twigs serve as the lid and connect to the plum pattern on the lid. The pine, bamboo and plum are called in China “Three Friends in Winter.” Even in cold weather, they don’t wither and die. Chinese men of letters often refer to them as symbols of nobility, unyielding morality and character.
