Part 2

Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 Minutes)

1. What bothered Tiffany during an interview with her candidate?

A) He just wouldn't look her in the eyes.

B) He was slow in answering her questions.

C) His résumé didn't provide the necessary information.

D) His answers to some of her questions were irrelevant.

She noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and some what disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise.

关键词bothered Tiffany,第一题对应段落是第一段,bothered的同义词是puzzled and disappointed,找出了关键词后接着看整句话,就可以得出bother的原因了,the candidate never made direct eye contact与答案A所表述的意思相当。

2. Tiffany's misjudgment about the candidate stemmed from______.

A) racial stereotype

B) invalid personal bias

C) cultural ignorance

D) emphasis on physical appearance

'I was just thrown off by the lack of eye contact; not realizing it was cultural,' Tiffany says.

关键词misjudgment,在文章前几段搜索Tiffany说过的话,不难发现第四段中not realizing it was cultural就是要找寻的答案。

3. What is becoming essential in the course of economic globalization according to the author?

A) Hiring qualified technical and management personnel.

B) Increasing understanding of people of other cultures.

C) Constantly updating knowledge and equipment.

D) Expanding domestic and international markets.

'as the world becomes smaller..., It is becoming essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions.'

关键词globalization和essential,表明作者意图的话是第五段essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions正是本问题的答案,所以本题选B。

4. What kind of organization is Mindsets LLC?

A) real estate agency

B) personnel training company

C) cultural exchange organization

D) Hi-tech company

My company, Mindsets LLC, helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots.

首先要找到Mindsets LLC,而后看全句,我的公司是帮助机构和个人see their own blind spots(找到他们自身的盲点),可以推知答案是B。

5. After one of the workshops, account executive Dale realized that_______.

A) he had hired the wrong person

B) he could have done more for his company

C) he had not managed his workforce well

D) he must get rid of his gender bias

Blind by gender

'Through..., I discovered my personal bias, '...in his case, the blindness was not about cultural but rather gender.

6. What did Dale think of Mindsets LLC's workshop?

A) It was well-intentioned but poorly conducted.

B) It tapped into the executives' full potential.

C) It helped him make fair decisions.

D) It met participants' diverse needs.

Dale credits the workshop, ' because it helped me make decisions based on fairness.'

从Blind by gender这一段的最后一句话可以推断出,Dale对整个讲习班持赞同态度:helped me make decisions based on fairness(它帮助我作出更公平的决定),答案是 C。

7. How did Doug, a supervisor, respond to a Chinese-American employee's request for leave?

A) He told him to get the date right.

B) He demands an explanation.

C) He flatly turned it down.

D) He readily approved it.

Year of the Know-It-All

When I advised him of this, I gave him a long talking to about turning in requests early with the proper dates.

首先找到Doug,不难发现在Year of the Know-It-All这一段。再找到跟respond相关的信息,gave him a long talking to后面的动作turning in requests early with the proper dates(在恰当的时候上交请求),因此答案是A。

8. Doug felt ____when he realized that his assumption was wrong.

'Needless to say, I felt very embarrassed in assuming he had his dates mix up.'

9. After attending Mindsets' workshop, the participants came to know the importance of____to their business.

'the biggest thing I took away from the workshop is learning how to be more inclusive in the future.'

10. When we view people as individuals and get rid of stereotypes, we can achieve diversity and benefit from the ____between us.

'Once we start to see people as individuals, and discard the stereotypes..., Diversity is about coming together and taking advantage of out differences and similarities.'

答案是differences and similarities。

James: The chief difference between the CET-4 and higher level exams, such as the TEM-8 or the IELTS or TOEFL, is that the questions aren't designed to be deliberately confusing – they lack the negative statements, ambiguities, and so on that characterize tougher papers. That said, it's still essential to be able to recognize the 'rewording' tactics used to make the questions more than just a simple matter of scanning the reading paper for the right words. For example, take Part II, Question 10. Here the answer is that we can 'benefit from our differences and similarities,' but the original text doesnt say 'benefit' – that would be too easy. Rather, it says 'take advantage of', a phrase with a similar meaning. Learning to spot these similar phrases is key to passing the exam.(Not all questions are this hard! For instance, Part II, Question 8, just requires you to realize that the 'I' in 'I felt embarrassed' is the speaker, Doug – not that difficult to work out!)

We have to be careful when reading for tense, too. For instance, in Part II, Question 5, a casual reading could make it look as though 'he had hired the wrong person' is the answer – but when we look at the text again, we see it says 'Had I not attended the workshop, I would have assumed …' – in other words, the hiring takes place after he's been to the workshop, not before. (The correct answer is D (he must get rid of his gender bias) – the text says he has to 'stop imposing his gender biases.'

譬如:第二部分第10道题的答案是benefit from our differences and similarities但是原文中并没有直接说benefit,那样的话,就太简单了。

二、Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) 深度阅读

Passage One

The January fashion show, called FutureFashion, exemplified how far green design has come. Organized by the New York-based nonprofit Earth Pledge, the show inspired many top designers to work with sustainable fabrics for the first time. Several have since made pledges to include organic fabrics in their lines.

The designers who undertake green fashion still face many challenges. Scott Hahn, cofounder with Gredory of Rogan and Loomstate, which uses all-organic cotton, says high-quality sustainable materials can still be tough to find. 'Most designers with existing labels are finding there aren't comparable fabrics that can just replace what you're doing and what your customers are used to,' he says. For example, organic cotton and non-organic cotton are virtually indistinguishable once woven into a dress. But some popular synthetics, like stretch nylon, still have few eco-friendly equivalents.

Those who do make the switch are finding they have more support. Last year the influential trade show Designers & Agents stopped charging its participation fee for young green entrepreneurs(企业家) who attend its two springtime shows in Los Angeles and New York and gave special recognition to designers whose collections are at least 25% sustainable. It now counts more than 50 green designers, up from fewer than a dozen two years ago. This week Wal-Mart is set to announce a major initiative aimed at helping cotton farmers go organic: it will buy transitional(过渡型的) cotton at higher prices, thus helping to expand the supply of a key sustainable material. 'Mainstream is about to occur,' says Hahn.

Some analysts(分析师) are less sure. Among consumers, only 18% are even aware that ecofashion exits, up from 6% four years ago. Natalie Hormilla, a fashion writer, is an example of the unconverted consumer. When asked if she owned any sustainable clothes, she replied: 'Not that I'm aware of.' Like most consumers, she finds little time to shop, and when she does, she's on the hunt for 'cute stuff that isn't too expensive.' by her own admission, green just isn't yet on her mind. But-thanks to the combined efforts of designers, retailers and suppliers - one day it will be.

57. What is said about the FutureFashion?

A) It inspired many leading designers to start going green.

B) It showed the designers using organic fabrics would go far.

C) It served as an example of how fashion shoes should be organized.

D) It convinced the public that fashionable clothes should be made durable.

58. According to Scott Hahn, one big challenge to designers who will go organic is that ______.

A) much more time is needed to finish a dress using sustainable materials

B) they have to create new brands for clothes made of organic materials

C) customers have difficulty telling organic from non-organic materials

D) quality organic replacements for synthetics are not readily available

Most designers with existing labels are finding there aren't comparable fabrics that can just replace what you're doing and what your customers are used to,从这一句我们就可以很好地推断出答案为D。

59. We learn from Paragraph 3 that designers who undertake green fashion_________.

A) can attend various trade shows free

B) are readily recognized by the fashion world

C) can buy organic cotton at favorable prices

D) are gaining more and more support

Those who do make the switch are finding they have more support(他们获得了越来越多人的支持),所以应该选D。

60. What is Natalie Hormilla's attitude toward ecofashion?

A) She doesn't seem to care about it.

B) She doesn't think it is sustainable.

C) She is doubtful of its practical value.

D) She is very much opposed to the idea.

Not that I'm aware of(我并没有意识到这些)。

61. What does the author think of green fashion?

A) Green products will soon go mainstream.

B) It has a very promising future.

C) Consumers have the final say.

D) It will appeal more to young people.

James: We can see some of the same rewording techniques used in Part B. For instance, the text states 'leading designers,' but the answer requires you to recognize this as the same as 'top designers.' Sometimes, however, recognizing the answer needs a fuller understanding of the whole context of the passage. For instance, question 59 points you to paragraph 3, but to realize that the 'designers who undertake green fashion' it's talking about are 'those who made the switch,' as the text says, you need to have understood the previous paragraph. Part B also requires more deductive reasoning on the part of the reader.

Part 3

BT: Hello, James, What do you think of the CET-4 exam? What level is it equivalent to in British exams?

James: As a language exam? It's about equivalent to A-Level.

BT: What does A-level mean?

James: A(dvanced) Level, you take them at 18.

BT: And according to the reading comprehension you have done, what kind of ability does the test try to see about for the students?

James: It's looking for a wide vocabulary and the ability to comprehend moderately complex texts

BT: In your opinion, is this kind of exam practical in the daily use?

James: It's a reasonably good test of reading ability, yes, and it represents the kind of articles and information that somebody in an English-speaking job or academic course would have to process.

BT: What's the form of language exam in the UK when you were in middle school?

James: We don't have middle school, only primary and secondary, and we don't take language exams until we're 16, at GCSE. Those are relatively easy basic ability exams.

☆考试的时候时间上感觉比较紧,写字都有点抖;

☆发挥最好的是阅读理解,做得很细,花的时间特别多;

☆做题时不能老看手表,造成心里紧张;

☆训练的时候多看题目,要尽可能熟悉题型;

☆难易程度还好,时间太紧了,答案还没填到答题卡上的时候,就只剩十分钟时间了,完型都还没做;

☆阅读做得不错,花的时间比较多;

☆考试时间紧,听力结束的时候只剩四十分钟,三篇阅读,翻译还有完型没做完,挺紧张;

☆听力的最后一部分发挥得比较好;

☆听力特别不太清楚,比预想的要难很多;

☆比较喜欢看文章,做题思路比较正确;

☆摆好对完型的心态,不要太患得患失;

☆看《双语时代》Gas Station里的一些环节,一些单词,都是比较地道的英文,对我的阅读理解和听力帮助非常大;

☆考前准备一些作文模板,阐述现象,分析原因哪,比如说三段论等等;

Part 4

Think in English

看美剧或大片,不放字幕,观看时采用听力英文思维配合画面猜想的方式来理解剧集;

Imitate

Structure

每篇文章必须包括引言、发展及结论三个部分(即引出问题、分析问题、解决问题);

不一定要用到大量的长难句和纲外词汇,但偶尔一些新颖的句式或较难但使用准确的亮点词汇会给文章增色不少;

(WHY, WHEN, WHERE, WHO, WHAT, HOW)

Rule 2:

and(和), but(但是), so(所以), when(当), because(因为), after(在……以后), before(在……以前), since(自从), although(虽然), unless(除非),until(直到…… )

Now(现在), usually(经常), sometimes(有时), occasionally(偶尔), first(首先), next(其次), then(然后), later(后来), finally(最后), eventually(终于), afterwards(以后), however(然而), furthermore(此外), moreover(此外), generally(一般地), suddenly(突然), fortunately(幸运地),unfortunately(不幸地……)

first of all(首先), at first(起先), at the beginning(一开始), later on(后来), just then(那时), at that moment(那时), at the finish(最后), in the end(最后), after that(之后), after a while(过一会儿), to tell the truth(老实说), frankly speaking(坦白说), generally speaking(一般而言), in general(一般而言), in addition(此外), what is more(此外), on the whole(大体上), on my way to…(在前往……的路上), all of a sudden(突然), all at once(立刻), as far as I am concerned(就我来说……)

Nowadays, there are more and more (某种现象)in(某种场合).It is estimated that(相关数据).Why have there been so many [某种现象]? Maybe the reasons can be listed as follows. The first one is(原因一). Besides, (原因二). The third one is(原因三). To sum up, the main cause of (某种现象)is due to(最主要原因). It is high time that something were done upon it. For one thing, (解决办法一). On the other hand,(解决办法二). All these measures will certainly reduce the number of (某种现象)
