Teen Decomposes Plastic In 3 Months

What all of us know about plastic is that it takes about 1000 years or so to decompose (分解), ifit does at all. But this was unacceptable to 16 year-old Daniel Burd from Canada, who has come up with a method to decompose plastic within just three months! He conjectured (猜测) that there surely must be something which can decompose plastic, and he found that the answer is bacteria (细菌).

Daniel Burd added yeast (酵母) to landfill dirt and tap water and finally added ground plastic and let the whole thing stew (焖). He found that the plastic had indeed decomposed much faster than it would have by itself.

Burd informed that all that is required for this project is a fermenter (发酵物质), a growth medium and plastic and also remarked that it should be easier on an industrial scale. It was revealed that the bacteria itself generates enough energy by producing heat as they eat the plastic, and that the only waste is water and a bit of carbon dioxide.

Life Desk

During the earthquake(s) last year in China, more than a few students and other civilians (百姓) were seriously injured or killed by the tables they were hiding under. Haishan Deng has a solution for instances such as these. Using the physics of the "Triangle of Life," Deng presents the "Life Desk."

The Life Desk is open for learning during regular times, and closed for danger during times of trouble. The main structure is high strength steel and nylon (尼龙) board, while the side structure is molten (熔铸的) steel molded round to disperse (分散) stress.

Deng has already interviewed with the Bureau of Education (教育局) in China, and they will be producing a limited amount of these desks to try them out in schools.

New Student Housing at the University of Twente

The University of Twente, located in the city of Enschede in the Netherlands, has a new building with 87 apartments for students.

The building is nine stories high on the sport fields' side. On the boulevard (林荫大道) side, the building fits the small-scale character of this pedestrian street (人行道) with two building layers. The supermarket and the hairdresser are on this side. On the first floor, the dwellings (住所) are situated round a communal roof terrace (公共的顶楼露台). The sports theme has been literally integrated into the architecture, as the facade (建筑物的正面) facing the sport centre is outfitted with a 30 metre high climbing wall. With 2,500 grips, this climbing wall is the second highest in the Netherlands and forms the eye-catcher of an otherwise rather straight-forward building.

The folds (折叠) of the wall look like the urban abstraction (抽象派艺术作品) of a mountain and give the building a sculptural (雕刻般的) appearance. Seen from the sports field, it seems to be bending its hip (臀). The brick frame around the glass panel facade emphasizes this impression and creates a logo-like shape.
