what除了用作代词、形容词、副词外，还可用于某些习语中。这些习语通常有习惯译法。现举例说明，仅供同学们学习时参考。

1. what ... for？ （为什么？）例如：

What did you do that for？ 你做那件事，是为了什么呢？

I told him what I was going to town for. 我告诉他我为什么进城去。

2. What + be ... like？ （……是什么样？）例如：

—Whats the weather like this morning？ 今天早上天气怎么样？

—It was fine. 晴天。

3. What do you think of ...？ （你觉得……怎么样？）例如：

What do you think of the film you saw yesterday？ 你觉得你昨天看的那部电影怎么样？

4. Whats the length长（width宽， height高， size尺寸） of ...？ （……有多长/宽/高/大？）例如：

Whats the length of the boat？ 这条船有多长？

Whats the height of that mountain？ 这座山有多高？

5. What about ...？ （……怎么样？），后跟动名词、代词或名词。例如：

What about taking a walk after supper？ 晚饭后出去散步如何？

He is going to swim. What about you？ 他打算去游泳，你呢？

What about the weather today？ 今天天气怎样？

6. What if ...？ （如果……怎么办呢？）例如：

What if he cried？ 如果他哭怎么办呢？

7. What else ...？ （还有什么？）例如：

What else could I say？ 我还能说什么呢？

What else can I do for you？ 我还能为你做什么呢？

8. Whats with ...？ （……怎么啦？）例如：

Mary looks worried. Whats with her？ 玛利面有愁容，她怎么啦？
