很多同学不清楚other(s)，the other(s)和another的用法，以致于在使用中常常出错。下面就简要区分一下它们的用法。

1. other用作形容词时，意为“其他的”。例如：

We study Chinese，English，maths and other subjects. 我们学习汉语、英语、数学和其他课程。

2. others常和some对比使用，意思是“有些”，而不是“其他的”。例如：

Some students were playing football，while others were playing volleyball. 一些学生在踢足球，另一些学生在打排球。

3. the other意为“两个中的另一个”，常见于“one... the other...”结构。例如：

I have two books. One is with a red cover，while the other is with a white cover. 我有两本书，一本是红皮的，另一本是白皮的。

One side of the road is covered with flowers ，while the other side is covered by sand. 路的一边长满了花，然而另一边却是沙地。

4. the others表示在一定范围内“其余的全部人或物”。例如：

The dictionary is better than the others. 这本词典比其余的都要好。

Some students went to see a film，while the others were doing their homework. 一些学生去看电影了，剩下的都在做作业。

5. another指不定数目中的“另一个”。例如：

This jacket is big. Please get me another. 这件上衣有点大，请再给我拿一件。

another还可以和“数词 + 复数名词”连用。例如：

Another ten students joined the League. 又有10位同学加入了共青团。

另外，请注意以下两个词组的用法：

1) any other后面跟单数名词和any of the other后面跟复数名词，可以与“比较级 + than”连用，表示最高级的意思。例如：

He is taller than any other student in our class. (= He is taller than any of the other students in our class.) 他的个子比我们班其他同学的个子都高。(意即：他是我们班个子最高的同学。)

2) other than意为“除了”，意思上相当于except/apart from。例如：

You cant get there other than by boat. 除了坐船去，用别的方法你到不了那里。

There was nothing we could do other than (but) wait. 除了等待以外，我们没有别的办法。
