插入语通常与句中其它成分没有语法上的关系，一般用逗号与句子隔开，用来表示说话者对句子所表达的意思的态度。常见的插入语的用法有以下几种：

一、表示自己的看法、态度或推测。

可用作这类插入语的有：I hope(我希望)，in ones opinion(在某人看来)，I think(我认为)，I believe(我相信)，I guess(我猜想)，it seems to me(照我看来)，to tell the truth(老实说)，I am afraid(我想)，personally(就我个人而言)，generally speaking(一般说来)，as/so far as I know(就我所知)等。

Personally，I dont like this painting.就我个人而言，我不喜欢这幅画。

In my opinion，the time is not yet ripe for it.依我看，时机尚未成熟。

二、表示对事物的肯定或强调。

可用作这类插入语的有：to be sure(确实、的确)，of course(当然)，in fact(事实上)，undoubtedly(毫无疑问)，certainly(当然)，needless to say(不用说)等。

Mr.Smith isnt rich，to be sure，he is a gentleman.的确，史密斯先生并不富有，但他是个绅士。

Of course，he did not succeed for the lack of experience.当然，他由于缺乏经验而未成功。

三、用来转变话题。

可用作这类插入语的有：by the way (顺便说)，incidentally(顺便提一句)，however(然而)等。

By the way，I have something to tell you.

我顺便有些事情告诉你。

Incidentally，if you want that book Ill bring it next time.顺便提一句，如果你想要那本书，下次我给你带来。

四、引起对方注意地观察、倾听或思考。

这类插入语有：dont you think(你说是吧)，you know(你知道)，you see(你瞧)，dont you know(你是知道的，不是吗?)等。

Their performance was wonderful，dont you think?他们的表演非常精彩，你说是吧?

They can make the most intricate instruments now，you know.你知道，他们现在能制造非常复杂的仪表了。

五、表示解释或说明。

这类插入语有：that is (to say)(也就是说)，in other words(换句话说)，so to speak(可以说)，as it were(可以说)等。

We left university last month，that is to say，in May this year.我们上个月离开学校，也就是说，今年五月份。

He is，so to speak，an upstart.可以说，他是个暴发户。

六、表示语意未尽。

这类插入语有：(and)whats more(而且)，in addition(另外)，and moreover(另外)，besides(而且)，most important of all(最重要的是)，(and)what is worse，worse still(更糟的是)等。

They were brave，and whats more，they hated violence.他们很勇敢，而且他们厌恶暴力。

The price is too high，and moreover，the house isnt in a suitable position.房价太高，另外，房子的位置也不好。

七、表示总结和概括。

这类插入语有：to sum up(概括地说)，in short(总而言之)，in conclusion(总之)，all in all(总的说来)，in a word(简而言之)，on the whole(总而言之)等。

To sum up，success results from hard work.概括地说，成功是艰苦工作的结果。

The book is，in short，the best Ive read.总而言之，这本书是我读过的最好的一本。★
