Reading habits look different around the world.What people choose to read also varies depending on their geographic location.Studying in Switzerland looked at international Google search numbers to determine the most popular bookgenres［类型］in countries where data was available.According to search trends,American readers prefer the classics to other popular categories.Book lovers in New Zealand and Ireland are also searching for older books that tend to be taught in literature classes.In Latin America,horror and romance are the most popular genres.Scary books dominate in Mexico and Argentina,and love stories win over readers in Brazil.The two genres tie for the No.1 spot in Venezuela.Fantasy is another popular genre read round the world,coming out on top in Italy,Germany,and Poland.India,home to the world’s most voracious readers,gravitates［被吸引到］toward poetry over the other genres.

2 Tiny“flower”formation spotted on Mars

During its ongoinginvestigation［调查；研究］of Martian rocks in Gale Crater,（the Curiosity rover stumbled on a tiny ）surprise.The rock artifact,which resembles a piece ofcoral［珊瑚］or a flower,is smaller than a penny.TheMartian［火星的］“flower”and thespherical［球形的，球状的］pieces next to it were likely“made in the ancient past when minerals carried by water cemented the rock,”according to NASA.Curiosity took an image of the little rock arrangement on Feb.24,2022 using the Mars Hand Lens Imager,a camera located on the end of its robotic arm.

4 Campaign against women and children trafficking

公安部开展打击拐卖妇女儿童行动

A specialcampaign［（有计划的）活动，运动］has been launched nationwide tocrack down［打击；镇压］against thetrafficking［非法交易；拐卖］of women and children.It will be carried out from March 1 to December 31,according to an announcement by the Ministry of Public Security.The campaign will focus on women and children of unknown origin,in particularvagrants［流浪者］and beggars,women and children with mental health issues or those who are hearing or speech impaired to ensure they were not trafficked,according to the ministry.The ministry is proposing to set up a mechanism that makes it easier for people to expose or offer clues relating to human trafficking or abductions.It also asks for DNA and other information of people who are believed to have been abducted and those claiming to be their relatives to be collected as soon as possible for matching.

5 Pharmaceuticals in rivers threaten world health

Pollution of the world’s rivers from medicines andpharmaceutical［药物］products poses a“threat［构成威胁的人或事物］to environmental and global health”,a report says.Paracetamol,nicotine,caffeine and epilepsy and diabetes drugs were widely detected in a University of York study.Rivers in Pakistan,Bolivia and Ethiopia were among the most polluted.Rivers in Iceland,Norway and the Amazon rainforest fared the best.The report says the increasedpresence［存在］ofantibiotics［抗生素］in rivers could lead to the development of resistant bacteria,damaging the effectiveness of medicines and ultimately posing“a global threat to environmental and global health”.
