汉语中，三、六、九，经常是虚指，表示多，用于夸张。如：

三姑六婆  九牛二虎  九牛一毛  九死一生

有人说，“三姑”指：尼姑、道姑、卦姑（占卦的）。“六婆”指：牙婆（以介紹人口买卖为职业从中取利的妇女）、媒婆、师婆（女巫）、虔婆（鸨母）、药婆（给人治病的妇女）、稳婆（接生婆）。这个解释很勉强，在硬凑数目。

而且三、六、九的倍数：十二、三十六、七十二、三百六十等，在汉语中也都是虚数，是夸张的说法，只是表示多。

李白有一首诗《秋浦歌》：

白发三千丈，缘愁似箇长。

不知明镜里，何处得秋霜。

Giles将该诗译成英语作：

My whitening hair would make a long long rope，

Yet could not farther all my depth of woe;

Though how it comes within a mirror’s scope，

To sprinkle autumn frosts，I do not know.

张祜有一首诗叫作《河满子》：

故国三千里，深宫二十年。

一声河满子，双泪落君前。

Bynner的英语翻译是：

A lady of the palace these twenty years，

She has lived here a thousand miles from her home.

Yet ask her for this song and，with the first few words of it，

See how she tries to hold back her tears.

这里“三千里”没有译作three thousand paths而是a thousand miles，是因为“三千”是虚指，而且英语中常用来夸张的数字是：

twenty，fifty，one hundred，one hundred and one，one thousand，one thousand and one

同理，中国的谚语“三句话不离本行”，译成英语就应当是：

to talk about one’s own

never to one’s own line
