On November 24, 2017 the project “Development and commercial application of highly cost effective catalyst RS-2200 for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of diesel”jointly undertaken by the SINOPEC Research Institute of Petroleum Processing (RIPP), the SINOPEC Jiujiang Branch Company, the Luoyang Engineering Company, and the Changling Catalyst Branch Company has passed the technical appraisal organized by the SINOPEC Science and Technology Division.

To cope with the production of diesel fuel meeting the national V standard for motor vehicle emissions, RIPP has successfully developed the highly cost-effective novel CoMo type catalyst RS-2200 for the deepened HDS of diesel by using a novel support with better expanded channels, an optimized precursor of active phase, and a highly dispersed active phase suited to the CoMo metallic system. Compared to the catalyst RS-2000, the catalyst RS-2200 has achieved a reduction of packing density by 15%, a cost reduction on unit volume of materials by 42%, a reduction of hydrogen consumption by 25% along with a catalytic stability increase of 31%. The metal loading and packing density of this catalyst are significantly lower than the similar domestic and overseas catalysts. The commercial application test of the catalyst RS-2200 in a 600 kt/a diesel HDS unit at the Jiujiang Branch Company has revealed that the deactivation rate of the catalyst RS-2200 is 0.9 °C/month during the long-cycle smooth production of the diesel fuel meeting the national V standard for motor vehicle emissions to demonstrate its outstanding catalytic stability.

The catalyst RS-2200, which has been granted two Chinese patents with independent intellectual property rights, is now being applied in three domestic diesel HDS units in commercial scale with its performance being on a par with the international advanced level.
