A Corpus-based Study on English Learners Register Awareness of Spoken and Written English, by DONG Jianqiao & MA Xingxing, p.4

Based on Chinese EFL learners corpora of spoken and written English and those of native speakersEnglish, this study analyzes Chinese English learners register awareness. 7 typical spoken and written linguistic features respectively are chosen as measurement parameters. Results show that English learnersregister awareness is weak, learners spoken and written English demonstrating the phenomenon of overlapping and mixture of the two. As learning time increases, there appears the developmental tendency in learners register awareness.

Constructionism holds that knowledge acquiring is a process of positive meaning construction on the basis of the learners knowledge and experience and under a certain circumstance. Based on the constructivist theory and the teaching practice of AID teaching model(that is, by organizing an assisting and interactive class to attain development for both the students and teachers) in our university, this paper has discussed the role of the students in the English speech-making course as a positive knowledge builder, autonomous learner and practitioner with a view to promoting the construction of this course.

On the Development of Note-taking Skill in Listening From the Perspective of Metacognitive Theory, by YANG Li, p.24

The note-taking skill is the advanced skill for learners of a second language in listening comprehension, becoming more and more important in learning and examination and having a strong practical value. Based on the theory of metacognition, this paper illustrates how to apply the metacognitive strategy into the teaching of note-taking skill in listening and the ways of developing students metacognitive awareness and metacognitive strategy. The teaching practice and feedback of the students show that the development of metacognitive ability in listening classes achieves good results in improving students note-taking skill in listening.

Authenticity in Foreign Language Teaching: A Perspective from Ordinary Language Philosophy, by ZHONG Caishun, p.28

“Authenticity”, albeit fundamental, has been controversial in foreign language education. In light of post-Wittgenteinian ordinary language philosophy, this paper investigates the uses of “authenticity”in foreign language education, characterizes their language games and expounds their forms of life. A philosophical reflection on authenticity in foreign language education reveals that the ambiguity of authenticity in foreign language education is rooted in its discursive recontextualization. Thereby, current foreign language education is critically reviewed with a focus on the explication of conceptual confusion by foreign language education practitioners.

This paper analyses the theoretical background of the college English teaching mode reform in the independent schools —“i+1” and constructivist theories. Taking Zijin College as an example, it introduces a series of reform on curriculum design, classroom teaching and evaluation system as well as studentsfeedback on the new mode. It also analyses the problems of the new mode and offers solutions to them.

A Survey of Current Situation of Local College Undergraduates English Learning via Using Informational Technology, by LIU Chunhui, p.70

Through questionnaires and interviews, this study reports the current situation of local college undergraduates English learning through using informational technology. The survey shows that the informational equipment in local college is poor, and the informational resource should be improved. Most students show the positive attitude to the CALL, while the actual situation of using informational technology is not so satisfactory. Students autonomous learning ability is very poor, they need guidance of learning strategies and learning attitudes.

Attribution Analysis of the Third Language Acquisition Barriers of Minority College Students in Xinjiang under the Multicultural Context, by LIU Maoqiong & YOU Xiaoli, p.73

In either practice or theory, the third language acquisition of minority students has appeared to be complicated and diversified. Meanwhile, it has evoked barriers and problems to be dealt with. Aiming to provide feedback and improve the level of L3 capacity and foreign language teaching, the research analyzes interrelated factors which hinder L3 from social language context, language distance, English and Chinese learning time, emotion psychology etc.

On Expectancy Theory in College English Teaching and Learning, by LIU Yumei, p.92

This article attempts to take advantage of Expectancy Theory put forward in 1964 by American psychologist Victor H. Vroom in college English teaching and learning to stimulate students learning motivation so as to achieve the goal of improving the quality of college English teaching. Starting from the concept of Expectancy Theory, based on its three principles of timeliness, objectivity and purposiveness, the article exemplifies the theorys application in the process of college English teaching and learning. It also suggests the importance for teachers to tolerate the differences among students and to be patient to see students make progress.

Teachers Corrective Feedbacks and Picture Talking: Testing of Comprehensible Output Hypothesis from the Perspective of the Senior High School Students, by LIANG Shangwei & LONG Shaobin, p.108

The study explores the feasibility of the comprehensible output hypothesis theory for senior high school students in Chinese contexts by way of picture-talking. The study revealed: (1) there exists significant differences in group oral performance among “requiring-no requiring” “reminding-norequiring” and “requiring-no reminding” groups, while no significant differences among “remindingno reminding” “reminding-requiring” and “no requiring-no reminding” groups; (2) Teacherscorrective feedback can improve senior high school students “comprehensible output” frequencies. Students are more sensitive to the “Repetition” “Explicit Correction” that teacher use more often; (3) In the studentsopinion, teachers “Recasts” is conducive to improving their spoken English.

In order to meet with the need of our countrys business market, business English translation teaching in vocational colleges must be reformed. In this paper the writer tries to sum up our experiment of all-round business English translation teaching reform in content, form, method, appraisal and construction of teaching staff and to find out a set of diversified business English translation teaching models aiming at its training goal and in line with the own features of business English translation, its professional characteristics and the actual status of vocational college students so as to fit in with the need of vocational education and train out interdisciplinary and practical business English translators.

Teachers and teaching materials are naturally bound together. Textbooks are major carriers for information. With the promotion in reforming College English, principles for its textbook compiling have to be reconsidered. Based on the current situations of college English textbook compiling and foreign language education, it is contended in this paper that ideas for textbook compiling must be humanistic and it is inevitable that general education, professional knowledge and multi-dimensional form should be combined together.

Speech Reporting: Types, Viewpoints and Reporting Purposes, by QIN Jiandong, p.156

We hold a view that speech reporting should be defined and classified by its pragmatic functions rather than its syntactic and structural variations. We should focus on the narrator himself, and on how the narrator uses his narrative viewpoint to achieve his narrative intention and reporting purposes. Apart from the stylistic functions of the speech reporting, our attentions must be paid to the pragmatic effects of both the reporting clause and reported clause, including the mechanism and the factors of language situation regarding how a locutionary act stimulates its illocutionary act and perlocutionary act.

Sociolinguistic Approach to the Attitude of Chinese College Students to Netspeak, by ZHANG Yaoqing & YANG Mengqiu, p.164

Based on previous studies, this research investigates the attitude of some Chinese college students and postgraduate students towards netspeak from the perspective of sociolinguistics. The results revealed that the netspeak fits into the theory of speech community and register theory; nevertheless, the research showed simultaneously that educational level of the subjects bear no direct relationship with their attitude towards netspeak.

A Study of metaphor function of nominalization in English Advertisements, by XIONG Zhan & HUANG Min, p.176

Previous studies of English advertisenemts focus mainly on the perspectives of translation and pragmatic usage. Within the framework of Functional Grammar, this paper tries to analyze nominalization from the perspective of grammatical metaphor. Nominalization materializes the processes, characteristics and abstract concepts. The research result shows that nominalization endows advertisenemts language with the characteristics of conciseness, formality and seriousness, which are helpful to realize the purpose of advertisenemts. Nominalization endows advertisenemts language with the meaning of metaphor and dual semantic features.

Gladys Yangs Hybrid Cultural Identity and Her Independent Translation and Introduction of Chinese Works, by DEND Hongchun & MA Yuehua, p.182

Gladys Yang is a British translator with a hybrid eastern and western cultural identity in Chinese translation history. While the present researches focus on the cooperative translation works by her and Yang Xianyi, little attention is paid to her independent translation and introduction of Chinese works. From the perspective of hybrid cultural identity, an analysis has been made into her translation thoughts, text selection, translation strategies as well as the features of her independent translation and introduction so as to enrich the research on her and gain a better insight into the essence of translation.

An Analysis of Advertisement Translation in Past Decade, by ZHAO Zhiying & BAO Tongfa, p.184

As the pioneer of market expansion in economic globalization, advertising bears an important mission. And the study of the advertisement translation has become one of the hottest spots in academic circles. This paper combines the qualitative and quantitative methods and tries to provide a systemic picture and the future orientation of the advertising translation field through sorting out papers about advertisement translation studies in the past decade. The result of the research shows that the published papers on advertising translation are springing up especially after the year of 2005. The research in this field has been improved and expanded. For example, there are more neodoxy including coming forth more interdisciplinary perspectives. Studies that cross linguistics, aesthetics, culture, and marketing-skopos realms are showing positive impact on advertising translation. In the future, more researches should explore deep links between theory and practice, more good translation examples should be found in a field survey. There are many more angles of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies are still waiting for a searching eye.

On the Influences of the Crescent Society Members Poetry Translation on Their Poetry Writing, by TAN Jia, p.192

Most modern Chinese poetry has come into being from the translation and imitation of western poetry. Renowned as Literature Research Society and the Creative Society in modern Chinese literature, the Crescent Society has played the role of medium and backbone to transmit native and overseas culture. Poets in the Crescent Society introduced and adopted forms of western poetry from translating to promote modern transformation of Chinese poetry. So new Chinese poetry emerged and developed irreversibly. Their poetry translation and writing have made huge contribution to exploring satisfactory systems of Chinese poetry. This paper aims to discuss the influences their poetry translation has made on poetry writing in the May Fourth cultural environment.

Analyzing the introduction of the Chinese version of musical Mamma Mia! in a perspective of the translation of lyrics, by XIE Xiaohong, p.197

The Chinese version of Broadway musical Mamma Mia! was introduced into China in 2011. It has been popular among Chinese audience since then and it has been putting on in some big cities of China in recent years. This article introduces how the Chinese lyrics of Mamma Mia! have come into being and analyses the translating skills and strategies of the Chinese lyrics of this musical. This article points out that the success of the Chinese version of Mamma Mia! owes much to the original translation of the lyrics.

Review and Theoretical Evidence of English Early Learning that cant be Missed, by CAO Xiaolei, p.216

This paper briefly introduces English Early Learning that cant be missed—the English Learning Route for Chinese Kids, including its main content in each chapter and major conclusions. Next, some theoretical evidence is provided based on findings in first language acquisition and second language acquisition in terms of listening input, language contexts, phonics and fluent reading, vocabulary recognition and fluent reading, extensive reading, as well as the functions of grammar. Finally, the readers that could benefit from the book and the problems to be further explored are pointed out.
