The sky is a large place, and though it had been carefully examined for centuries, new features still turn up. Last March it was the reigns of Uranus(天王星), and last week astronomers announced what may turn out to be a new planet, though a very small one, in the solar system.

The object was first sighted last month by Charles Kowal, an astronomer at the Hale Observatories in Pasadena, Calif. Mr Kowal detected a faint trail of light on photographic plates, indicating that something was moving in relation to the background of stars. Other observers have confirmed the discovery.

The“mini-planet”, identified for the time being as“Object-Kowal”, appears to be about 1.5 billion miles away, between the orbits of Saturn(土星) and Uranus, and its diameter has been estimated at between 100 and 400 miles. Its orbit has not been determined yet, but if the orbit proves to be roughly circular, like that of the major planets, the new object world probably take 66 to 70 years to make a circuit of the sun.

Some astronomers have speculated that Mr Kowals discovery may be the first indication of an asteroid belt beyond Saturn.

Have you ever walked into a candy store with a young child and watched with delight as the store manager gave the youngster a small treat? Or have you ever received a telephone call from a retailer asking you whether an item you purchased a month before was meeting your needs? No doubt you noticed these gracious acts.

Business firms in this highly competitive dacade are quick to institute programs designed to ensure product and service quality. But its often the “little things” that help build a permanent tie between sellers and buyers.

If you want to make those “little things” a high customer service priority(优先权), here are a few tips for you to follow.

Make a list of the simple, but gracious acts you can perform for your customers. It might include handing out key chains or other small gifts to customers after a purchase, or extending delivery service to elderly customers. Just be sure every item is realistic, economical and easy to carry out.

Training in the “little things” helps your people learn skills and attitudes. If you want your people to hand out small gifts of your business, be sure theyre kept in stock. If you want your people to take extra time with customers, be sure you schedule enough staffing during peak business hours. If you want your people to follow up with customers on the telephone at the end of each month, be sure you drop the sales load a bit at that time.

Training in the “little things” doesnt end with a single activity. It must become part of everyday life in your business. Emphasize the importance of the “little things” by word and deed. Be sure everyone visibly practices the art of customer courtesy(礼貌) each day. Announce the power of the “little things” through every possible means. The more cheer leading you do about this topic, the more it will become deeply fixed in the workplace.

The famous director of a big and expensive movie planned to film a beautiful sunset over the ocean, so that the audiences could see his hero and heroine in front of it at the end of the film as they said goodbye to each other for ever. He sent his camera crew(摄制组) out one evening to film the sunset for him.

The next morning he said to the men, “Have you provided me with that sunset?”

“No, sir.” the man answered.

The director was angry. “Why not?” he said.

“Well, sir,” one of the men answered, “Were on the east coast here, and the sun sets in the west. We can get you a sunrise over the sea, if necessary, but not a sunset.”

“But I want a sunset.” the director shouted. “Go to the airport, take the next flight to the west coast, and get one.”

But then a young secretary had an idea. “Why dont you photograph a sunrise,” she suggested, “and then play it backwards? Then itll look like a sunset.”

“Thats a very good idea!” the director said. Then he turned to the camera crew and said, “Tomorrow morning I want you to get me a beautiful sunrise over the sea.”

The camera crew went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay. Then at nine oclock they took it to the director. “Here it is, sir,” they said, and gave it to him. He was very pleased.

They all went into the studio. “All right,” the director explained, “now our hero and heroine are going to say goodbye. Run the film backwards so that we can see the ‘sunset behind them.”

Forget counting sheep, next time you are having trouble dropping off to sleep; try putting on a jazz CD.

Researchers have shown just 45 minutes of relaxing music before bedtime can make for a restful night. The Taiwanese researchers studied the sleeping patterns of 60 elderly people with sleep problems. They told the Journal of Advanced Nursing, how the technique was easy to learn and lacked the side-effects of other treatments.

The study participants were either given a choice of music to listen to before going to sleep or nothing at all. The music group were able to choose from six tapes that featured soft, slow music—around 60-80 beats per minute—such as jazz, folk or orchestral pieces.

Listening to music caused physical changes that aided restful sleep, including a lower heart and respiratory(呼吸) rate, the researchers found.

The people in the music group reported a 35% improvement in their sleep, including better and longer night-time sleep and less dysfunction(机能障碍) during the day.

Lead author Professor Hui-Ling Lai, of the Buddhist Tzu-Chi General Hospital and the University of Taiwan, said: “The music group reported a 26% overall improvement in the first week and this figure continued to rise as they mastered the technique of relaxing into sedative music.”

Professor Jim Horne, from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, said: “If anyone is a bit worried before they go to bed then anything that can help calm them down and relax is a good thing.”

“Some say making sure older people sleep less in the afternoon and get plenty of exposure to daylight can help them get a better nights sleep.”

If youve been joining in chat room conversations, or trading email with Webpals, you have become one of the millions who write in a peculiarly short form of English.

And youve got a sense of humour about short forms like SOHF (=sense of humour failure) to describe Internet newcomers who dont understand you.

Across the globe, every night teenagers and their elders are “talking” on-line—many of them all talking at the same time.

Its fast: try talking to six people at once. Its brief: three or four per exchange. It takes wit, concentration, and quick fingers.

And it requires tremendous linguistic economy. Theres neither time nor space for explanations. Why consume precious key-strokes telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB (be right back) will do? Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI (pardon me for jumping in).

Interested in whom youre talking to? Type A S L,the nearly universal request to know your pals age, sex and location. You may get 15 M NY as a response from your pal.

If something makes you laugh, say youre OTF(on the floor) or LOL (laughing out loud), or combine the two into ROTFL(rolling on the floor laughing).

And when its time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG (got to go) or TTYL (talk to you later).

People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing emotion, as it takes more time to hold down the“shift” key and capitals. Punctuation is going, too.

1. Many people talk on the Internet ____.

A. by sending short emails

B. by using a particular short form of English

C. by using peculiar English words and expressions

D. in a funny way

2. In order to talk to several people at the same time on the Internet ____.

A. you have to speak fast and fluently

B. you should speak with wit and humour

C. you have to express your ideas in a brief way

D. one should pay much attention to the accuracy of the words

3. If you get 17 F NY as an answer to your A S L, it means ____.

A. the person on the other end is 17 from New York and he is fine

B. you are talking to a girl who is 17 and lives in New York

C. you are talking to 17 girls who are from New York

D. the person who are talking to you is a 1.7-foot tall New York girl

4. To save time on the Internet ____.

A. some people leave their letters in the dustbin

B. some people never use “shift” in their writing
